Many of us have faced drug abuse and addiction, either through a personal experience or by watching a friend or a loved one struggle. Opioid addiction is a national epidemic that claims thousands of lives each year. Often, people become addicted to these harmful substances as a byproduct of their underlying mental conditions, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Recently, Dr. JD Yang was appointed to Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney’s task force to combat the opioid epidemic in our area.
On Feb. 6th, 2017, Dr. Yang spoke about finding the primary cause of addiction and using alternative treatment for depression at the Main Line community center, the New Leaf Club. The New Leaf Club is a non-profit community center that frequently hosts events related to wellness and recovery. The event was free and open for all interested members of the public to attend.Finding the Cause
At the YANG Institute of Integrative Medicine, we believe it is critical to carefully diagnose each individual so that we can recommend the most effective treatment. Particularly when we have a patient who has been struggling with substance abuse, we need to determine if there are any underlying medical conditions or environmental stressors that would make them more likely to become addicted to drugs like opioids.Alternative Treatments
At the event, Dr. Yang discussed many alternative, non-drug therapies that we offer at the YANG Institute of Integrative Medicine, including:
- Acupuncture: This classic Chinese healing technique is effective in improving both physical and mental functions. Our acupuncturists are thoroughly trained in this technique, which complements the work of their regular physician
- Q-EEG Based Neurofeedback: This non-invasive technique helps patients measuring and visualizing the brain functions with quantitative EEG known as Brain Mapping, monitor their brain activity and then use this information to allow the brain to train itself. Neurofeedback is useful for treating many conditions such as stress, anxiety and mild depression.
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS): This advanced technique directly targets regions of the brain with a highly-focused magnetic field that helps normalize brain function and regulate mood.
If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction or other mental health issues, we invite you to come in for a consultation at our office to receive non-drug therapies such as acupuncture in the Main Line area.
