Chronic Lyme Disease
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system.
A lot of times people were not diagnosed or treated, therefore it evolved into a chronic condition, and at times people were treated for a month of antibiotics but later developed debilitating symptoms that affected almost every aspect of their physical and mental state.
While the medical community is still debating about the use of antibiotics, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine continues to be very useful in relieving the symptoms and restoring the functions of those who suffer from chronic Lyme disease.
Medications and psychotherapies are often needed to help people cope with their mental health issues and resulting disabilities.
