Conceiving comes easy for some couples, but for others, not so much. After what seems like endless doctors’ appointments and medical bills, the journey of getting pregnant can become stressful, frustrating and hectic. For some couples, it seems that no matter how many times they try to have a baby, it just doesn’t happen – even with the rapid advancement of technology in the medical field. That’s when it may be time to take a step back and opt for a more natural, traditional approach, such as acupuncture. The customary Chinese medicinal treatment is claimed to help generate a successful pregnancy, and is a practice that has been around for over 3,000 years.
Acupuncture, the ancient therapy of placing thin needles in certain points of the body, is based on the theory that energy can be balanced and health can be restored by stimulating specific pathways of flow. While it isn’t scientifically proven to cure infertility, it has no negative side effects and is supported by various forms of validated research. Studies show that acupuncture can boost fertility in both men and women, as well as assist with the process of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Although the old therapy has been in Western medicine for a long time, it has become a popular treatment in the United States within the last couple decades.
Acupuncture is believed to help support fertility in a variety of ways:
- Helps correct issues in the neuroendocrine system.
- Can activate the release of hormones from the brain to stimulate ovaries and other reproductive glands.
- May increase blood flow to the ovaries and uterus to thicken the lining and increase chances of implantation.
- Can stimulate sperm growth in men.
- Reduces stress.
Enhancing Fertility in Men
Having a low sperm count can reduce the odds of achieving a pregnancy, which is why some men turn to acupuncture for assistance. Some forms of research suggest that the treatment might be able to significantly improve the strength of the sperm’s ability to swim, as well as increase the amount of sperm. Medical experts believe that acupuncture also enhances the health and quality of sperm, especially when it comes to structural defects.
Assisting the Method of IVF
Many couples spend a lot of their finances on IVF only for it to fail time and time again. However, the natural approach of acupuncture could have a positive effect on conceiving via IVF. Some researchers speculate that the Chinese therapy can help relax the muscle tissue and increase blood flow in the uterus, hence providing embryos with a better opportunity for implanting. The reduction of stress and pain provided by the traditional treatment may also play a major role in the success of IVF.
