TMS - A Breakthrough Treatment for Depression
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy, or TMS, is one of the most advanced ways to treat depression. It is a safe and effective, non-drug treatment for patients who are not satisfied with the results of standard drug therapy.
This clinically-proven treatment provides benefits without the side effects associated with antidepressants and is 70% more effective than medication.
FDA approved in 2008, psychiatrists who offer TMS have successfully helped thousands who suffer from depression and anxiety, bringing new hope to patients every day.
How does TMS work
TMS is the first treatment in the history of psychiatry to directly target brain regions related to depression. It uses a highly focused, pulsed magnetic field, similar in type and strength to those produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The TMS device focuses magnetic pulses that either activate (for depression) or suppress (for anxiety) brain circuits to normalize and stimulate function in brain regions known to affect mood.
Benefits of TMS Therapy
- Non-invasive (no anesthesia or sedation)
- Fast acting (improvements in 3-4 weeks)
- Long lasting benefits
- Side-effect free
- Safe for pregnant women and adolescents
What Can TMS Treat
TMS is FDA approved for treating depression. It also benefits the following clinical conditions and further studies are underway for FDA approval:
- Anxiety Disorder (OCD, social anxiety, panic disorder, PTSD)
- Substance Abuse
- Eating Disorders
- Autistic Spectrum Disorders
- Chronic Pain (Fibromyalgia, Migraines and etc.)

What Our Patients Say
Since introducing TMS at Yang Tao Institute in Marlton, NJ and Bryn Mawr, Pa, patients who suffer from depression and anxiety, and who seek a drug-free treatment, successfully experience a more positive psychological outlook on life to help them achieve a happy lifestyle professionally and personally.
"I have had many years of persistent anxiety and depression since I was 12 years old...at times I was unable to leave my home. I missed a lot of experiences as a teenager and a young adult. Medication to help ease the anxiety and depression made me feel terribly worse. TMS was my last hope and all the people at Yang Institute made me feel very comfortable. My mood, mentality and everything changed to a much more positive feeling. My family and friends noticed I smile much more with a happy glow to me. I now can finally see myself serving a good purpose. I used to view myself as a wasting away soul. Life is worth living."
"I have been suffering from depression for about two years. The medication helped but not completely. I was not feeling myself and would sometimes cry for hours. This summer I decided to have TMS along with Dr. Yang's comprehensive care program when I was visiting my son in the U.S. After 6 weeks of daily treatments of TMS, acupuncture, psychotherapy, nutrition and other services, I feel so much better. When I first came, I could barely walk 20 minutes. Now I take a walk for more than an hour everyday and even my twenty-year-old son cannot keep up with me. I am full of energy and very optimistic about my future."
