Treating ADHD and ADD with Neurofeedback – an Alternative Solution

Children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) endure an everyday behavioral struggle. The disorder causes young individuals to have negative interactive experiences such as impulsive reactions, inability to focus, lashing out, and in some cases, aggressiveness. Back in 2011, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a report stating that 6.4 million children in the United States were diagnosed with ADHD and since then, that number has increased. Although attention deficit disorders are common in kids between the ages of 4 to 17, there are alternative treatments that can help diminish behavioral symptoms, such as Neurofeedback.

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a practice of integrative medicine that is designed to teach the brain to produce wave patterns that enhance the ability to focus. First, the patient is evaluated and examined by the practitioner. After that, the practitioner maps the brain of the patient. The patient then wears a cap lined with electrodes that record brain-wave activity and is asked to sit for several minutes with the eyes closed. The results taken from the electrodes show up as a digital map that is color-coded so that brainwave activity can be indicated and compared. Using this information, a treatment plan is adjusted accordingly to help eliminate ADD and ADHD symptoms.

The Neurofeedback Advantage for ADD and ADHD Treatment

According to the article, “Alternative ADHD Treatment: Neurofeedback” by Pamela Michaels on AdditudeMag.com, a study conducted by Vincent Monastra, Ph.D., the founder of the FPI Attention Disorders Clinic in Endicott, New York, showed that neurofeedback helped to maintain the ability to control attention. The findings also presented that some of the patients were able to reduce their prescribed dosage by half after a year of the neurofeedback treatment. A main benefit of Neurofeedback for individuals with ADD or ADHD is that the treatment’s effects seem to remain after the sessions have ended. In addition, neurofeedback itself is safe and does not have any negative side effects.

An Alternative Medical Approach

Conventional medicine typically approaches the diagnosis of behavioral disorders by prescribing medication that has negative side effects. The side effects make it difficult for some children to continue with their medicine dosage, allowing their ADD or ADHD symptoms to remain untreated. For this reason, many parents may want to seek alternative therapies, and neurofeedback may be the solution.

ADD and ADHD can be treated through an integrative medicine approach that focuses on the mind, body and spirit. Unlike modern medicine that provides treatment once or twice a year when the condition is at its worst, integrative medicine aims to maintain health at all times throughout the year. Our healthcare centers at the Tao Institute of Modern Wellness offer neurofeedback throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We combine traditional Chinese medicine and the latest technology of western medicine to provide a non-drug intervention for ADD and ADHD to produce dramatic results.
