Treating Depression with TMS Therapy: With Medicine, or Without?
If you suffer from depression, the symptoms can take a toll on your quality of life. While some days may be worse than others, dealing with the physical and emotional conditions of the mental illness can be a struggle. The experience is a mixture of irregular sleep patterns, feelings of hopelessness, social isolation, abnormal eating patterns, mood swings, inability to concentrate, and weight gain. You want it all to stop. Anything for a positive day. You’re taking a prescribed antidepressant which helps a little bit, but the side effects of the medicine seem to cause a delay in your progress. Is there another way to fight depression? Is there another treatment that can help?
Yes – integrative medicine. There is a multitude of treatments available for people fighting depression using a holistic and natural approach. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy is one of them. The treatment is a non-invasive and non-systemic form of neuromodulation of which nerve cells in the brain are stimulated by highly concentrated MRI-strength magnetic field pulses to enhance mood regulation.
The therapy is usually administered daily for four to six weeks and is approved by the FDA. Patients undergo the treatment in combination with their antidepressant medication to help eliminate the symptoms of the illness. However, recent research has shown that TMS Therapy may be able to treat depression effectively without the need for prescriptions.
According to a recent announcement made by Neuronetics, Inc., a study published in Brain Stimulation presented that those who responded to TMS Therapy benefited from the treatment without taking antidepressant medication. The research was conducted during a twelve month period with once-a-month scheduled treatments using NeuroStar TMS Therapy. It was also noted that the therapy can help prevent patients from falling back into depression. Approximately one-third of the patients in the study experienced a positive outcome from the NeuroStar TMS Therapy without consuming antidepressant medication.
We at the Tao Institute of Modern Wellness conduct TMS Therapy using the NeuroStar System and have seen our patients conquer their mental illness using the treatment. Patients come to us for prescribed TMS Therapy and are provided with a tailored program designed to meet their health goals and needs. Our personalized approach can include group meditation, nutritional counseling, medication management, and acupuncture, along with TMS Therapy at our center in Cherry Hill, NJ, as well as at our other locations in the Tristate district.
Our patients do undergo TMS Therapy in combination with their antidepressant medication while others undergo TMS Therapy alone. With or without medicine, TMS Therapy can still be beneficial for individuals who suffer from depression. Are you interested in treating depression using a natural approach?
